A Schengen visa cover letter is a short explanation of your trip and the documents in your pack. It should make the application easier to understand, not add a second version of the story.
Use it to connect the form, itinerary, accommodation, funds and return plan in plain language, then submit it only if the official checklist for your country or visa centre asks for one.

When a cover letter helps

Simple cover letter structure
Start with your name, passport number, nationality, residence country, planned dates and destination. Then explain the purpose of travel, itinerary, accommodation and funding.
End by listing the key supporting documents and stating that you will return before the visa expires. Do not oversell the trip or make claims that the documents cannot support.

If someone else pays or hosts you
If a sponsor pays for the trip or a host provides accommodation, say so clearly and match the letter to the sponsor documents. The cover letter should not replace a sponsor letter, invitation, host ID or financial evidence when the official checklist asks for those.
Use names, addresses and dates that match the invitation, hotel booking, bank statements and form exactly.
Cover letter mistakes
The common mistake is writing a persuasive essay instead of a clean explanation. Long emotional letters can make a simple file harder to review.
The best cover letters are boring in the right way: specific, consistent and easy to check against the documents.
