Schengen travel insurance requirements

Travel medical insurance is one of the standard Schengen visa documents. It needs to support the trip you declared, not just exist as a generic policy certificate.

Official EU guidance refers to emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation. Country checklists commonly require at least EUR 30,000 cover valid across the whole Schengen area for the full stay.

Visaroy helps you prepare and check your Schengen visa application. It does not submit it for you and cannot guarantee a visa decision.

The core insurance rule

The policy should cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death. Most Schengen checklists require at least EUR 30,000 of cover.

It should be valid in all Schengen countries and cover every day of the intended stay, including arrival and departure dates.

  • At least EUR 30,000 medical cover.
  • Emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation.
  • Validity across the Schengen area, not only one country.
  • Coverage for the full trip dates shown on the form and itinerary.

What the certificate should show

The certificate should make the key facts easy to verify: applicant name, policy number, coverage amount, dates, territory and covered benefits.

If the certificate does not clearly show Schengen-wide coverage or EUR 30,000 cover, bring supporting policy wording if the official checklist allows it.

Dates must match the trip

Insurance dates that start one day late or end before departure can make the pack look inconsistent. Match the policy dates to the travel dates on the form, transport and accommodation evidence.

If you change the itinerary, update the insurance and re-check the documents before the appointment.

Insurance mistakes

A cheap policy is only useful if it meets the visa checklist. Do not assume all travel insurance products are Schengen-compliant.

The visa centre is checking the document, not only the purchase confirmation, so make sure the certificate itself is clear.

  • Coverage below EUR 30,000.
  • Policy valid only in one destination country rather than the whole Schengen area.
  • Insurance dates that do not cover every day of the trip.
  • Certificate missing the applicant name or policy validity period.
